HERE’S HOW TO MAKE YOUR HOME SAFE FOR YOUR CHILDREN

We tend to associate the term ‘safety’ specially for kids with places that we are most comfortable with, like our homes! Children are naturally curious and they love to explore a lot. Whether our kids are crawling, toddling, or even driving, it’s our job to keep them safe from the hidden dangers lurking at home. For expectant parents, it can be overwhelming to look around the home to see what changes should be made to keep their kids safe.

First-time parents may ask – do I have to baby-proof my home? And the answer is resounding YES! Research shows that children are more likely to be injured at home than anywhere else. Part of that may be because kids spend a lot of time at home compared to other places. To make it easier for you, we at Wudless, top interior designers in Bangalore have collated a childproofing checklist to ensure safety at home for kids.

Generally, the houses are designed keeping in mind the comfort of adults for which the safety of babies is usually ignored. However, we cannot change our home’s architecture, yet we can apply specific hacks to prevent any hazard to babies. Let’s brief it room by room.

living room

Starting it up with the living room, it is better to keep all the sharp ends, edges and corners of your furniture covered so that they don’t get bumped into them and get hurt. This is applied to every type of furniture in every possible room. Most importantly if your kids are hyperactive, use a wall strap for large furniture and other delicate items like TV screens. This will prevent them from banging on the floor even if your kids are messing around with them in your absence. If at all you are using pedestal fans, never leave them running unattended if you have toddlers at home since they can easily hurt themselves by messing with the fan blades out of curiosity.

kitchen area

The kitchen area in your home usually has a lot going around almost the entire day. Women in India spend a lot of time cooking and cleaning and so, the kids often roam a lot in that space. To keep them safe first and foremost it is better to keep knives, scissors, and other sharp utensils, preferably inside a drawer or a cabinet at a substantial height out of your child’s reach. Cook on the back burners of your cooking units or stoves whenever possible. Make sure that the handles of pots and pans are turned towards the wall not hanging in the air so that children couldn’t get bumped in them. And mainly try keeping all the flammable props away from children’s reach.

the staircase

Third, comes the staircase, which is a modern trend at many independent houses nowadays. It is very important to take in this regard is to never let the little children at home take the stairs on their own. While constructing your staircase, make sure that the steps aren’t too big and the gaps between the rails are completely closed. The floor material used for the steps shouldn’t be much slippery.

the bathroom

The last comes the bathroom as the kids are accompanied by a parent. But make sure non-slippery floorings are used to avoid kids from falling. Pay extra attention while in the bathtub or shower. Also, by keeping them away from switchboards.

In markets, there are many home barricades and fences and partitions available to be used at home. You can reserve a space for your kid and put them safe and ofcourse under your supervision, inside their space. This will give them their own space and they will start being independent and safe at the same time. Your peace of mind guaranteed too.

By highlighting the last line, it is better to keep unused electrical outlets covered and other electrical appliances unplugged when not in use. Keeping the windows and balcony closed, constructing properly closed rails where ever needed is also one of few things that need to be noted.

To conclude making your home a safe place to live for your kids, we suggest you be as vigilant as you can! It is unrealistic to give up all your duties and observe your child’s day-to-day activities.

“I recommend parents get on the floor at their baby’s eye-level and look around other needs for Childproofing. It helps them look at their home differently, and it’s easier to spot things.
